Things To Consider When Picking A Contractor

1. Make a list and check it twice!

The first thing you want to do is nail down exactly what you want and what you don’t want with your project. Making a detailed list for the prospective contractor can not only make your estimate accurate but also speed up the process of getting the dream project you want. Asking family and friends or simply taking a walk around your neighbourhood to see what others have done and politely ask for the contractors contact information.

2. Ask for a referral.

Word of mouth referrals are golden! They can definitely give you insight on what it is like to work with a contractor and how to deal with the unexpected costs; cause we all know there are going to be unexpected costs due to supply, demand and simply adding an element to your project. A contractor with a long list of customers can show the company has integrity with how they deal with their customers.

3. Is the contractor experienced, insured, bonded?

It is always advisable to work with a contractor who has specialized experience, is insured or bondable. You can simly ask how long they have been in business and do your research on the company with such things as how their website operates and their Google Reviews.

4. Confirm your information and choose a contractor.

After you have considered 3-4 contractors carefully, invite them to your property to verify experience and insurance; ask for proof of insurance. You can also call the insurance company provided to make sure they are still insured. You do not want to get into a situation mid-project where the insurance could be revoked due to such things as non-payment.

Once you have confirmed all of the above items, pick your contractor. Remember, the contractor with the lowest estimate is not always the best option. This could result in them changing the contract throughout the project resulting in more unexpected costs that aren’t actually needed. You will want a contractor who has a 100% satisfaction guaranteed policy, warranties for their work and above all is up front and honest with you in the beginning.

5. Get a written contract.

Now that you have booked your contractor, get a written contract. You will want it to outline all the specific details of the project: material costs, labour costs, timelines etc. And make sure to settle on a start and finish date.

There you go! You are now ready to go and select your contractor.
